The Progenitor Virus led the way for the Tyrant Virus to be developed. Not much was revealed about it until Resident Evil: Zero. The Progenitor Virus was the baby of Dr. James Marcus, who was appointed Director of the Umbrella Research Centre by Lord Spencer. It came from the research into the 'mother' virus. Marcus developed his studies with the DNA of leeches, and with his research, they began to move as a colony, as one being. Marcus became exceedingly paranoid as his research continued, even referring to his leeches as his children. He didn't trust any other Umbrella employees, except for Albert Wesker and William Birkin, which would prove to be a fatal mistake. He was vexed about Spencer's desire to financially gain from Marcus's work, and Marcus started to plan to keep his Progenitor Virus away from Spencer. But, Wesker and Birkin had Marcus assassinated, thus letting Birkin take over the Progenitor Virus research for Umbrella, and Lord Spencer.
